What Do The Bible Writers Mean When They Use The Title 'Son of God' For Jesus Christ?

Is Jesus son of God or Himself God?

Question : Is Jesus son of God or Himself God? Please explain and also refer Rom 9:5 and Col 1:9-18 in it.

Answer : Greetings to you in Jesus wonderful name! Most of the time when we say that Jesus is the Son of God, usually our thoughts go on to think in a human way to assume 'Son' means Jesus was created by Father God who is in heaven and therefore He is not God in Himself but the one who is God's special representative to save humans. This is a gross misunderstanding due to the error of not understanding the Bible writers mindset of what they meant when they said Jesus as the 'Son of God'? Let us see in the light of the Scripture what does it mean?

John the apostle said and emphasized that confessing Jesus as the Son of God is so powerful enough to save a person and bring him or her in to a direct relationship with God. This is not the usual thinking of many people today who take the word Son of God so lightly as just a another human who is special to God. That means the way John expressed Jesus as the Son of God is God Himself who only can save a man from sin and give eternal life (John 6:68; 10:28; Matt 16:16). Here is what John expressed, 1 John 4:15: “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God,” and John 20:30-31: “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” Truly there is power in the confession that Jesus is the “Son of God,” but what does it mean?

First we will see what it is not, Jesus the Son of God does not mean that he is a just a man or like the prophets who were just humans with sin nature and have come as God's mouth piece before Him which many believed Him to be (Matt 16:13-14, 15-16; James 5:10, 17-18), Jesus is not like angels who were created and were called in the Book of Job as the sons of God (Job 1:6). In the Book of Romans Paul call all sons of Adams who accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and who are led by the Spirit as the mature sons of God (Rom 8:14), Jesus although has been fully Spirit led as a mature son of God (Matt 4:1), He is the one and only Son of God by His eternal nature.

Isaiah said, "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isa 9:6). Here in the above verse, we see that the Child which was the human body which God prepared for Jesus was born on earth (Heb 10:5-7), but the Son who has been in eternal existence was given from heaven who humbled Himself by giving up His Sonship glory in heaven and settled inside the lowly body of a baby to become a man (Php 2:6-8; John 8:14, 23, 42, 58). How do we know that this Son who has come from heaven to become a lowly baby is God Himself? In the above same verse where Isaiah the prophet prophetically revealed about the eternal Son becoming a baby child, he further continued saying about the uncreated Divine seed and essence within Him with the following description, "Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace," so from this we know that Jesus the Son of God who was given by God to become a Child to save all humans from their sins is the Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, etc...who also is the very God of very God (Matt 1:21, 23; Luke 1:35; Heb 1:8-9).

So when the writers of the Bible describe Jesus as the Son of God, they were speaking of the Divine eternal uncreated nature and person within was none other than God Himself. Jesus the Christ is God who lived 2000 years ago and is living with all humans by His omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience (Matt 1:23), who is the exact replica and the revelation of the unseen God to the physical dimension of human personalities in human form (John 14:7-11). No humans have ever seen God except the only begotten God Jesus Christ who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained and revealed Him to all humans (John 1:18; 1 John 4:12). No man could have seen Jesus the Christ in full glory if he had not left His Glory in heaven to have come as common man in appearance (1 Tim 6:14, 15-16), in this way Jesus even before he had become human have had limited himself to reveal Himself as the one true God to all true followers of God who walked by faith in their earthly pilgrimage (Psa 84:5; Heb 11:6, 13-14, 15-16), in such times of the Old Testament period the pre-incarnate Christ did reveal Himself in theophany which is a visible manifestation to humankind of God (John 17:1, 5). In other words, since creation Jesus the eternal Son of God left His full glory of God and was limiting Himself to reveal Himself as the God of all humans and continued like this until He returned back rising from the dead to again regain all the glory of God which He had left since creation to take the place of authority at the right hand of God to be the first and the last, the alpha and omega, the Almighty with power and glory again before which John the apostle could not even stand when he came to meet John again (Mark 14:62; John 17:5; Rev 1:8). This is what Son of God means to John the apostle!

The word 'Son of God' in the Jewish mindset means He is equal to God and is God Himself (Prov 30:4), so this is the reason they killed Jesus as they thought that it is a utter blasphemy for Jesus to say that He is the Son of God and equate Himself to God (Matt 26:63-64, 65; John 10:30, 32-33, 34-35, 36). This they did because they were not able to fathom the miracle of virgin birth of Jesus who is the Son of God (Luke 1:30-32, 32-33, 34-35). Thus we come to the clear conclusion that the 'Son of God' according to all the writers of the Bible who used this title for Jesus, had in their mind the concept that Jesus was not a created human, but uncreated Divine being who is God Himself in the flesh of human (John 1:1-5, 14).

Paul says in Rom 9:5 says, "of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen." Here in this above verse Paul the apostle says that Jesus the Christ who came as a human in the line of the Israelite's, by eternal Sonship He is over all the creation and is a eternally blessed God and not just a human born as a Jew.

Again Paul in Col 1:9-18 emphasizes the preeminence of Christ over all his creation as he says that Jesus was not just a human but God who became one among the humans to redeem them from sin and give them forgiveness and God the Father is the one who planned it all to take them out of the power of darkness of Satan to bring them in to the Kingdom of His Son of His Love, Paul further says that,"15 He [i.e. Christ Jesus] is the [exact replica] image of the invisible [Father] God, the firstborn [i.e. God] over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn [i.e. glorious God-man of the new creation] from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence."

Thus we know that Paul along with all other apostles speaks about the eternal Son as God Himself in human form (Col 9:13).

Much Blessings....
