Can All Believers Speak In Tongues?

Do All Speak In Tongues?

Question : Do all speak in tongues?

Answer : Greetings to you in Jesus wonderful name! When we come to this important question, 'Can all believers speak in tongues and should all do?', someone people say, "How can you say that all Christians should speak in tongues considering the apostle Paul's words, 'Do all speak in tongues?'?
(1 Corinthians 12:30).

What they do not realize as a uninformed person is, this passage 'Do all speak in tongues?', is talking about public ministry gifts that are manifested with in the church, and most importantly one should understand that apostle Paul here above is not talking about the common tongues which are given as the initial sign of the baptism in the Spirit which all believers can get from the Lord equally as a child of God, which continues as a private, devotional, prayer language until a person dies physically
(Acts 10:45-46; 11:15-16; 1 Cor 14:2).

You can recognize this by simply looking at the language Paul uses concerning speaking in tongue where he says,
"different kinds of tongues" (see 12:10,28); "Different kinds" which means "not the usual and common," which is the one that no man understands or interprets [i.e. always given as external evidence by God with the gift of the Holy Spirit or Baptism Of the Holy Spirit], but rather it is "different kinds" of varieties of tongues which enables the speaker or someone else to recognize the meaning of the tongue and thereby interpreting it to the Church for edification (1 Cor 14:5, 13, 27-28).

So when Paul ask the question,
"Do all speak in tongues?," the accurate answer is a clear 'NO,' because not all have been given this gift of "different kinds" of tongues to speak and edify within the Church, but some are given this gift (1 Cor 12:10, 30). God has appointed these men within the Church to speak words with understanding to teach all and edify them all (1 Cor 12:28; 14:19).

Paul corrects the misuse of tongues in the Church by instructing them to stop the practice of gathering
"the whole church [so] everyone [can] speak in tongues" (v. 23) that is of their personal prayer language, when there are uninformed or unbeliever coming among them, because when they are there no one of the uninformed or the unbeliever can be able to say 'amen,' except when they understand the words given through the interpretation of tongues or with understanding within the Church (1 Cor 14:15-16, 17, 19, 23). This clearly shows us that everyone in the Corinthian church was speaking in tongues except the uninformed believer who has not yet received the gift of the Holy Spirit or the unbeliever. Also apostle Paul said to the Corinthian church believers, that he "personally speaks in personal tongues to God more than them all" which clearly shows that all of them have already received the gift of the Holy Spirit with the external evidence of speaking in tongues and were continuing in this prayer to God in the prayer language of tongues which He has given (1 Cor 14:18). Thus all believers should receive the gift of the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in unknown tongues which is their God given privilege and then continue in their personal prayer to God daily for at least an hour or two to get edified and hold the glory of God more and more in their lives through building a better and a bigger spiritual house for God to reside within them, and be spiritually charged again and again to carry on the purposes of God in His perfect will for their lives.

So the bottom line is, when there are people within the Church who are uninformed who have no Baptism of the Spirit or an unbeliever has come to hear the Word of God, the whole Church believers are told to restrain themselves from being a group prayer meeting and continue as a corporate body of edification to speak words from the Lord in understandable language or by interpretation of tongues which is equal to prophecy
(1 Cor 14:5). Though Church should desire to prophecy earnestly as the top priority for the edification of the assembly, at the same time the Church order for edification should not reach to a point where we are all told strictly to not to speak in tongues at all which will again quench the freedom of the Spirit (1 Cor 14:26, 39; 1 Thess 5:19-21).

Much Blessings....
